Expanded metal grating is offered in a standard (raised) or flattened pattern. Expanded metal grating is created by slitting and stretching metal sheets until diamond openings are present. While other shapes like circles or squares can be created, the diamond shape provides enhanced structural integrity and resists mechanical deformity after installation.

The process of creating expanded metal allows a regular sheet of steel to increase up to ten times the original size. Through this expansion, the metal decreases the weight per square foot by up to 80% while retaining form and rigidity. Expanded metal provides savings in both overall weight and the amount of material required for a final product as well as decorative or aesthetic advantages. These different styles come with a wide range of gauges, opening sizes, and sheet dimensions to best fit whatever project you are using them for. The numerous small openings in the expanded metal allow for the flow of liquids, air, and light while still providing a barrier for larger objects.

Expanded metal is exceptionally receptive to welding, easy to cut, and can be formed to fit most installations with the proper equipment. The expansion of the metal saves on material costs, however, it cannot hold significantly heavy loads and is typically used for platforms and catwalks where only routine foot traffic is present.
