Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) Steel Tubing

ERW tubing is produced at welding mills by welding the seams of steel coil strips, sheets or skelps. To create steel tubing, the steel strip is unwound from a coil and trimmed along the side to control the width and pre-condition the edge for final welding. The strip is then passed through several contoured rollers to cold-form the material into the desired shape. This can be round, square, or rectangular. The conditioned edges are forced together and then welded at extreme temperatures to create a uniform and secure union.

Drawn Steel Tubing

Drawn steel tubing is the process of pulling a steel product through a die, to create a steel tube with better dimensional tolerances than ERW tubing. The process to create drawn steel tubing starts much like ERW tubing, drawn steel is passed through a die to produce an accurate size and gauge in accordance with customer specifications. Some advantages of deep drawing over ERW are lower cost, better strength-to-weight ratio, and more complex geometric designs.
